Terms of service

These are the rules for using Beaconeer. We've written them in plain language because you should actually be able to read them. If anything here is unclear, ask us — the contact details are at the bottom.

1. Who we are

Beaconeer is made by UpperCloud ("we", "us"). Beaconeer is an app for small circles of close friends: you send up a one-hour beacon — I'm here, come find me — and see who drifts over. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to these terms.

2. Who can use Beaconeer

You need to be at least 13 years old to use Beaconeer (or older if the law where you live says so). If you're under 18, make sure a parent or guardian is okay with you using it.

3. Your account

You sign in with Apple or Google — we never see or store a password. You're responsible for what happens under your account, so keep your device secure.

Everything you post — messages, photos, your profile — is yours. You give us only the license we need to operate the service: to store your content, deliver it to the circles you've shared it with, and display it inside the app. That's it. We don't use your content for advertising, and we never sell it.

4. Circles are small on purpose

A circle holds at most 16 people. That's not a limit you can pay to remove — it's the product. Beaconeer is for the people you'd actually text, not an audience. There are no feeds, no followers, and no performing.

5. Acceptable use

Beaconeer is built on trust between friends. Don't break it:

Blocking is mutual and absolute: when someone is blocked, neither person receives the other's beacons, sees the other's presence, or appears in the other's circles. We don't make exceptions.

6. Beacons and location

A beacon shares one fixed spot with one circle for up to one hour, then it ends on its own. The exact coordinates are automatically deleted 24 hours after the beacon expires — only the place name and who came remain, as circle lore. We never ask for always-on location. 7. Content and moderation

You can report a person or a message from inside the app. We review reports and may remove content, restrict features, or terminate accounts that violate these terms. We aim to be fair and to err on the side of the person being harmed.

8. Deleting your account

You can delete your account in the app, any time, without emailing anyone. Deletion removes your profile, your circle memberships, your devices and push tokens, and your messages and photos on the schedule described in the privacy policy. If you signed in with Apple, we also revoke your Apple sign-in token so the connection is fully severed.

9. The service itself

We're a small team building something we care about. The service may change as it grows, and occasionally things will break — we'll do our best to fix them quickly, but we can't promise Beaconeer will always be available or error-free.

10. Disclaimers and liability

Beaconeer is provided "as is". To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, and our total liability to you for any claim related to the service is limited to the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us in the past twelve months (Beaconeer is currently free, so: $100). Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't legally be limited.

Common sense still applies when you meet up in the real world: Beaconeer tells you where a friend is, not whether it's safe to cross the street to get there. Look after each other 🫶

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in California.

12. Changes to these terms

If we make a meaningful change, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Beaconeer after that means you accept the updated terms. The latest version always lives at beaconeer.co/terms.
